Washington, DC (PRWEB) November 4, 2008 -- The Smart Television Alliance (STA) commends the work of the Rand Corporation and American Academy of Pediatrics for researching and publishing a report on the link between sexual television content and teen pregnancy.
"This report confirms what parents, caregivers, and educators have been saying for a long time. Violent, indecent, and inappropriate television is harmful to children," says Christopher Turman, Director of the Smart Television Alliance.
The Smart Television Alliance is a new campaign of leading nonprofit organizations representing diverse constituencies from educators and nurses to parents and caregivers. Collectively, the STA reaches millions of American households.
"We consistently receive anecdotal evidence from parents and teachers about how inappropriate, indecent, and violent programming or too much television viewing by children plays out negatively at home and in the classroom," said Susan Scanlan, Chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations and Co-Chair of the Smart Television Alliance. "This new study further supports the need for parents and caregivers to seek out quality television programs, monitor your children's media diet, and take control of television at home."
The STA's mission is to urge parents and caregivers to take control of the television children watch at home by using technology and by making smart viewing choices as part of a balanced media diet. STA promotes children's programming which is educational, informative and entertaining. The STA is united in calling for parental action and highlighting children's television content that is educational, entertaining, age-appropriate and safe.
"Television can be a powerful tool to educate, inspire and entertain children when we make smart choices," said Christopher Turman of the Smart Television Alliance. "However, this study confirms that inappropriate television viewing can have very serious consequences."
Scanlan praised TiVo Inc. for sponsoring the Smart Television Alliance and for helping all families identify and manage television and online media content in their homes, regardless of whether they are TiVo subscribers or not.
