Is Your Portable Television Ready for the Digital Switchover?

Google

Portable television has, up to now, been the Achilles heel of digital television. It seemed that portables had been forgotten in the rush to switch on digital and switch off analogue television transmissions. As the switch over starts in 2008 and is due to finish in 2012 it seems to be a good time to examine how portable televisions now fair in a digital world.

2 years ago there was no such thing as a portable digital television. There were few digital televisions of any type the onus was squarely on set top boxes to convert satellite or freeview terrestrial digital broadcasts to make them viewable on your television.

Almost 2 years later the situation has changed. For a start it's pretty difficult to find a traditional CRT television on the shelves of any high street electrical store. Everywhere you look you will find some pretty amazing flat screen models. Many now include digital tuners do you can receive free view right out of the box. Quite a few also include built in DVD players. The technological advance in the last couple of years is dramatic.

So the answer to the question, "Can I buy a digital portable television?" is an emphatic, "YES".

Unfortunately, that is not the whole story. All of the portable digital televisions now on sale should work fine as long as they are connected to a good roof top aerial. If you want to be truly portable - camping or caravanning for instance - things become more difficult.

For a start you are going to need to carry a separate aerial. In all probability you will need to use an active booster aerial. These contain electronic circuitry to increase the signal provided by your aerial. It all adds up to more things to carry and more power supplies needed.

Portable digital television technology is advancing rapidly. Truly portable television now needs a similar advance in digital aerial booster technology. Its going to happen. But it is not quite ready now.

In 2008 the UK starts to switch off the analogue television signal in favour of digital transmissions. Overnight, millions of traditional televisions will become obsolete. Make sure you are ready for your personal digital switch over by visiting www.thedigitalswitchover.co.uk now.
